How to Apply Eyeliner
Eyeliner is a versatile makeup essential that can dramatically enhance your eyes, a technique favored by iconic actresses from Marlene Dietrich and Marilyn Monroe to Gwyneth Paltrow. A popular method to create a captivating look is to rim the eyes with a white or beige eye pencil, which effectively enlarges the white of the eye, resulting in a seductive and alluring appearance.
Application of Eye Pencil
To apply the eye pencil, gently pull your eyelid away from the eye using one or two fingers. Draw a line along the inner rims of both the upper and lower lids. To soften a sharpened pencil for easier application, you can first draw a few lines on the back of your hand, which will help the color flow more smoothly.
Kohl can be applied similarly for a striking effect. With roots in ancient Egyptian beauty practices, kohl is a traditional element of eye makeup in the Middle and Far East. Apply the kohl pencil along both the upper and lower rims from corner to corner. For a smoky effect, use a sponge-tipped applicator, eyeshadow brush, or even your fingertip to blend and smudge the color.
Once you are satisfied with the look, set it with a light application of loose powder. For a more intense effect, consider applying your chosen color around the eyes in cream, liquid, or powder forms.
Using Liquid Eyeliner
Liquid eyeliner can create a stunning and sophisticated look once you’ve mastered the application technique. However, it may require some practice.
Begin by positioning yourself in front of a good magnifying mirror to ensure clarity during application. Using your free hand, gently pull the eyelid taut. If you are right-handed, start applying the liquid eyeliner from left to right, and vice versa for left-handed application. Draw a single continuous fine line across the eyelid. If you prefer a thicker line, simply retrace your application.
When applying liquid eyeliner, aim to get as close to the eyelashes as possible, even allowing the liner to slightly overlap the lashes. This technique helps prevent the unsightly white line that can occur when the eyeliner doesn’t meet the lashes.
As with any new technique, applying liquid eyeliner takes practice. Keep a bottle of makeup remover nearby until you feel confident in your skills. Remember, “practice makes perfect.” With perseverance and a steady hand, you’ll soon master this essential makeup application technique and achieve stunning results.
