After more than 40 years in the beauty industry, I’ve learned one important truth: beautiful skin isn’t created by makeup alone.

As a licensed cosmetologist who has worked with skincare, cosmetics, and custom-blend makeup over the years, I’ve seen countless products promise miraculous results. While quality skincare certainly has its place, no cream or serum can completely undo the effects of years of unhealthy habits.

Your skin is the largest organ in your body. It protects you every day from the environment, helps regulate body temperature, and serves as a barrier against germs and other outside elements. Because it’s visible to the world, it’s also one of the first places where our health and lifestyle choices show up.

People often tell me I look younger than my age. Now in my early 60s, I’m frequently told I look 10 to 15 years younger. While I’m grateful for good genetics, I also believe that many of the choices I’ve made throughout my life have helped me maintain healthy skin. Our daily habits—both good and bad—play a much bigger role in how our skin ages than most people realize.

Lifestyle Habits That Affect Your Skin

Smoking

Smoking is one of the biggest contributors to premature skin aging. It reduces blood flow to the skin, damages collagen and elastin, and can lead to fine lines and deeper wrinkles, especially around the mouth and eyes.

I saw this firsthand with my mother, who smoked from a very young age. She developed wrinkles much earlier than many women her age. Smoking doesn’t just affect your lungs—it also shows on your skin. As a child, I remember the yellow stains on the walls and curtains from cigarette smoke. It made me think later in life about what smoking must be doing to the body—and to the skin.

Thankfully, I never became a smoker, and I believe that decision has contributed to the health and appearance of my skin over the years.

Alcohol

Moderate alcohol consumption may not affect everyone the same way, but excessive drinking can dehydrate the body and skin. Over time, it may contribute to puffiness, redness, and a dull complexion.

I’ve never been much of a drinker, and staying hydrated has always been one of the ways I’ve tried to care for my skin from the inside out.

Stress

Stress is something many of us experience, and our skin often reflects it.

During one of the most stressful periods of my life, in my late 20s and early 30s, I struggled with adult acne. While stress isn’t always the direct cause of skin problems, it can trigger or worsen conditions like acne, eczema, and other inflammatory skin concerns.

Learning to manage stress is just as important for your skin as it is for your overall health.

Sun Exposure

If there’s one skincare habit I wish I’d started earlier, it’s protecting my skin from the sun.

Like many people in my younger years, I loved spending time in the sun. I could tan easily and rarely burned, so I didn’t think much about sunscreen. Looking back, I can definitely see the effects years of sun exposure had on my skin.

Today, living in Florida, I take sun protection much more seriously. I wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day, seek shade when possible, and wear hats when I’m outdoors for extended periods.

There are also wonderful self-tanning products available today that can give you a beautiful glow without exposing your skin to harmful UV rays.

Protecting your skin from the sun is one of the best investments you can make for maintaining healthy, youthful-looking skin.

Healthy Habits That Support Beautiful Skin

While skincare products are important, they work best when they’re paired with healthy lifestyle habits.

Exercise

Regular exercise improves circulation, helping deliver oxygen and nutrients throughout the body, including the skin. It also supports collagen production and can leave your skin looking healthier and more radiant.

Nutrition

Healthy skin begins with good nutrition.

Eating a balanced diet filled with fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, healthy fats, and whole grains gives your skin many of the nutrients it needs to repair and protect itself.

No skincare product can replace good nutrition, but the right products can certainly complement a healthy lifestyle.

Hydration

Water is essential for every organ in your body—including your skin.

Staying hydrated helps your body function properly and supports healthy-looking skin. While drinking water isn’t a cure for wrinkles, proper hydration is an important part of your overall health and wellness.
